I have been riding a high for the last few days after seeing the Avengers (more on that later) this past weekend. I really thought there was nothing that could harsh my squee - yes, I really did think that - but living in a state full of homophobic dumb asses proved me wrong. I cannot believe they passed that idiotic amendment by more than 22 points! It isn't enough that gay marriage is already illegal in North Carolina, they had to pass an amendment to the State Constitution to make it even more illegal. The really, really idiotic thing about it is, they were so determined to ban gay marriage, they didn't even realize they were screwing het, unmarried couples as well.
"Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State." This is sooo vague and sooo very broad, there is no way of truly knowing how it's going to impact anyone. There is a silver lining to this, I guess. My employer sent out a memo to everyone saying "this action will not impact our long-standing policy to extend same-sex partner benefits to our faculty and staff" so that's a good thing.
I kept thinking, hoping, praying that people were not going to be short-sighted about this, especially with so many prominent people advocating against it, but it was not meant to be. Sometimes living in such a conservative state is a real drag, though, it could be worse, right? Some of the stuff going on in some the red states is a very scary thing. At least, NC stepped into the 21st century enough to go blue at the last presidential election, though they definitely mitigated some of that forward-thinking at the midterm election. I guess I'll just have to keep hoping that we'll go blue again in November. < crossing fingers >
